Video to MP3: questions

How do I convert a video to MP3?

Take the sound track out with a converter that runs on your device. On tuul.io you add your videos, pick the MP3 quality and download the MP3 files, many at once if you like; nothing is uploaded.

Can I get the sound from a CCTV recording?

Yes, from Dahua .dav files and Hikvision exports, if the camera recorded sound. Many cameras record none, and the row then says so. Camera audio is usually G.711 at 8 kHz, telephone quality, so 128 kbps is plenty.

Which videos work?

MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and MPEG-TS videos, and Dahua and Hikvision recordings. WAV files can be turned into MP3 too. Files that hold no sound, such as raw .264 streams, get a row that says so.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

192 kbps is the standard and sounds like the original for speech and most music. 320 kbps is the most MP3 can hold, for music you care about. 128 kbps makes files a third smaller and is fine for speech, voice notes and CCTV sound.

What is the M4A option?

Most MP4 and MOV videos store their sound as AAC. M4A puts that AAC sound in its own file without re-encoding it, so it's exactly the same as in the video and takes a second. It plays on iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows and in browsers. When a video's sound isn't AAC, its row says so; choose MP3 for those.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The converter downloads once to your browser and then runs on your device, so your videos never leave it.

What if the video has no sound?

Then there's nothing to extract, and the file's row says that the video has no audio track. The other files in the batch are converted as usual.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current versions of Safari and Chrome. Very long videos need a lot of memory, so for files over about 1 GB a computer is more reliable.
