Convert MOV to MP4

Turn MOV videos into MP4 files that play and upload in more places. The video is copied into the MP4 instead of re-encoded, so quality stays exactly the same and it takes seconds. iPhone videos in H.265 stay H.265: they play on phones and Macs, and on Windows with the free HEVC Video Extensions. It runs in your browser, so your videos are never uploaded.

MOV to MP4: questions

How do I convert MOV to MP4?

Rewrap the video instead of re-encoding it. On tuul.io you add your MOV files and download the MP4s: the video is copied over as it is, so quality stays the same and even a large file takes seconds rather than minutes.

Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?

No. MOV and MP4 are close relatives, so the video stream is copied over frame for frame. Only audio that MP4 players don't all support, such as uncompressed PCM, is converted to AAC. The recording date is kept and the phone's GPS location is left out.

Why won't my iPhone video play after converting?

iPhones record H.265 (HEVC) by default, and the MP4 keeps it. H.265 plays on iPhone, Mac and Android, and in Chrome and Edge on most recent computers. Windows needs the HEVC Video Extensions, and VLC plays it everywhere. To record H.264 instead, set Settings > Camera > Formats to Most Compatible.

What if my MOV uses ProRes?

ProRes and other editing codecs can't go into MP4 without re-encoding, which this tool doesn't do. The file's row tells you when that's the case. A desktop app such as HandBrake can convert those files.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The converter downloads once to your browser and then runs on your device, so your videos never leave it.

Can I convert several videos at once?

Yes. Add as many as you like; they are converted one after another and each gets its own download button.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in current versions of Safari and Chrome. Very large files can run out of memory on phones, so for videos over about 1 GB a computer is more reliable.
