HEIC to JPG: questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG?
Convert them in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. On tuul.io/heic-to-jpg/ you add your HEIC images and download the JPG files, one by one or all as a ZIP.
What is the difference between HEIC and JPG?
HEIC is the format iPhones and many Android phones save photos in. It takes about half the space of a JPG at the same quality, but Windows, many Android apps, websites and upload forms can't open it. JPG is the most widely supported photo format. It keeps files small but has no transparency.
Why can't I open HEIC photos on Windows or Android?
HEIC compresses photos with HEVC (H.265), which needs a decoder many systems don't include. Windows needs the HEIF and HEVC extensions from the Microsoft Store, and many apps and websites can't read it at all. JPG opens everywhere.
Why are the JPG files bigger than the HEIC photos?
HEIC is about twice as efficient as JPG, so the same photo at the same quality takes more space as a JPG. Lower the quality to make the JPG files smaller; 80% still looks the same on a phone screen.
Do portrait photos stay upright?
Yes. iPhones store portrait photos sideways with an instruction to turn them, and that turn is applied once, so every photo comes out the way it looked on the phone.
What about Live Photos and HDR photos?
A Live Photo is a HEIC still plus a short MOV video; the still is converted here. HDR photos are saved in standard range, because JPG and PNG can't hold HDR, and the row says so.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
Is there a limit on how many images I can convert?
No. Everything runs on your device, so the only limit is your device's memory. Hundreds of images at once is fine on a computer.
